Description

Wheatley Hill, County Durham born right half Lew Stoker played junior football for Brandon Juniors in 1926, Esh Winning Juniors in 1927, Bearpark in 1927 and West Stanley in 1929 before joining First Division Birmingham in 1930, for whom he made his Football League debut against Huddersfield Town that December. He spent most of his professional career at Birmingham, for whom he played 246 games in all competitions, scoring twice.

He had been twice a non playing reserve in England squads before he won his first full England cap in a 0-0 draw against Wales at Wrexham in November 1932. He was a reserve three more times for England games and won two more full caps, against Scotland in a 3-0 win at Wembley in April 1934 and in a defeat to Hungary in Budapest a month later. He also made one appearance for The Football League. In 1938 he moved on to Nottingham Forest, where he made his final 11 League appearances before Christmas the same year, and he officially retired during the Second World War.

NB in the photograph he sits with Frank McGurk.
