Measham, Leicestershire born goalkeeper Jonty Starbuck began his football career with hometown Measham United in 1904 and joined Second Division Burton United in July 1905, making his Football League debut at Blackpool at the beginning of September and remaining ever present throughout the 1905-06 season. He missed only two matches in the 1906-07 season but when Burton failed to be re-elected to the League, he joined Leicester Fosse in June 1907 after 80 appearances for Burton.

He never established himself as the absolute number one glovesman during his five seasons at Filbert Street, having strong competition from Horace Bailey and subsequently Fred Mearns, but he did play 18 times in the top flight in their single season at the level in 1908-09. He joined non league Ilkeston United in the summer of 1912 after 89 appearances for The Fossils, and subsequently joined Burton All Saints in 1913 before his eventual playing retirement.
