Todmorden, Lancashire born bespectacled goalkeeper Harry Stansfield was on Bolton Wanderers’ books during 1907-08 but didn’t make a first team appearance, and joined junior club Bolton Collingwood in 1908. He had a trial with Barnsley in 1911 before joining Bath City in 1912 and then on to Southern League club Bristol Rovers that November, making 29 appearances for Bristol Rovers in their 1914-15 campaign immediately before the onset of the First World War forced the suspension of peacetime football in May 1915.
After the First World War he returned to Bristol Rovers and when they moved to become a founder member of the Football League Third Division, Stansfield, already 29 years old, made his Football League debut in their inaugural League fixture at Millwall in August 1920, making his only 3 Rovers appearances within a week before losing his place in their first eleven to legendary Rovers custodian Jesse Whatley. Stansfield finished his professional football career some time thereafter.
