Saltcoats, Ayrshire born centre half Daniel Spiers began his football career with Scottish League Morton in 1888, and along with many other Scottish players made his way south to the professional leagues in England, joining Football League club Burnley in 1889, making his Football League debut at Derby County in January 1890. Over 3 seasons at Turf Moor he scored once, in a 3-3 home draw with Sunderland in September 1890, in 27 appearances before leaving the club in 1892.

It is assumed he then joined Southern League Reading, where he is known to have spent the 1895-96 and 1896-97 seasons.

Note, while this is definitely the Reading player, it may be a different D Spiers to the one who played for Morton and Burnley.
