Newcastle born left half Fred Speed played for Newark Town in 1930 and from there was signed, initially as a forward, by Third Division (North) Hull City in February 1931, making his Football League debut against Barrow the same month, scoring in a 1-1 draw. He scored 15 goals during The Tigers’ 1931-32 campaign before moving into the half back line the following season, helping them to win the Third Division (North) Championship in 1932-33. But at the higher grade he became a fringe player and moved to York City in the close season of 1934 after 18 goals in 52 appearances for Hull City.

He was a regular during his two seasons at Bootham Crescent, scoring 17 goals in 86 appearances before joining Mansfield Town in June 1936. He made 114 appearances during his three seasons at Field Mill, exactly 100 of those coming in the League, scoring 6 times for The Stags before a move to Exeter City in July 1939. However after playing in only two matches of Exeter’s abandoned 1939-40 season, the Second World War’s arrival ended his football career.
