Forward and later left back William Somerton played football at Oxford (University?) before moving to Bristol in 1883, joining newly formed Bristol Rovers in 1883, as vice captain. They were originally formed as Black Arabs FC before changing their name to Eastville Rovers during Somerton’s time with The Pirates (and subsequently Bristol Rovers in 1899). He was their club captain from 1884 to 1886 and from 1889 to 1891, and helped them win the Gloucestershire Association Cup in 1889, retiring from injury in 1892.
