Description

South Kirkby, Yorkshire born centre forward Alf Somerfield began his football career with Milnthorpe Working Men’s Club in 1936 and played for Frickley Colliery in 1937 before joining Third Division (North) Mansfield Town in May 1938, making his Football League debut at Swindon Town that October, scoring in a 2-1 victory. Such was his form for Mansfield, where he scored 10 goals in 20 appearances, that he was signed by First Division Wolverhampton Wanderers in March 1939 but didn’t make a first team appearance for the League runners up before the outbreak of the Second World War brought a temporary halt to his career.

After the War he resumed with Chelmsford City in 1945 but signed for Wrexham in June 1947, scoring once in their final two games of the elongated 1946-47 season. In September 1947 he signed for Crystal Palace and scored 3 times in a dozen appearances during 1947-48 before joining Worcester City in the summer of 1948, subsequently joining Kidderminster Harriers a year later, where he finished his career.
