Hibernian left winger William Smith was signed from Shettleston and made his Hibs debut at Hamilton Academical in a Scottish League match in August 1908, scoring in a 1-1 draw. He soon established himself as a regular member of the Hibs first eleven, and was part of their team that lost the 1914 Scottish Cup Final in a replay after a 0-0 draw in the first match at Ibrox Park, Smith scoring Hibs’ goal in a 4-1 defeat in the replay also at Ibrox. He scored 56 goals in 337 appearances over a 12 year career at Easter Road, retiring at the end of the 1919-20 season.
He represented The Scottish League on three occasions, being first selected in October 1911 in a 3-0 win over The Irish League at Firhill, playing exactly a year later in a 1-0 defeat to The Southern League at Millwall, and finally he played in a 3-2 victory over The Football League at Turf Moor in March 1914.
