West Melton, Yorkshire born wing half John Smith played as an amateur for Manningham Mills in 1925 from where he joined Third Division (North) Bradford Park Avenue in November 1926, making his Football League debut at Tranmere Rovers the same December in a 2-1 victory. The following season he scored twice in 15 appearances over the campaign as Avenue won the Third Division (North) Championship, but with the exception of 1930-31, when he scored once in 29 appearances across the campaign, he was a fringe player across his seven seasons with Bradford, scoring 4 times in 64 appearances and playing for the club for the last time in March 1933 in a 2-1 defeat at West Ham United.
