Bilston, Staffordshire born inside forward Billy Smith began his football career with Willenhall in 1895 and joined First Division Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1896, making his Football League debut against Burnley that November. He had three seasons at Molineux, joint top scoring in 1897-98 with 11 League goals, scoring 19 times in 62 appearances before joining Southern League Portsmouth in 1899, where he became something of a stalwart. He was a member of the Pompey team that won the Southern League Championship in 1901-02 and scored 85 goals in 266 appearances before joining non league Gosport United in the summer of 1908.

He was the older brother of Steve Smith who played for Aston Villa and England prior to joining Portsmouth, and later played for New Brompton (Gillingham), and the two played together at Pompey for 5 seasons.
