Nantwich, Cheshire born winger Herbie Simpson joined local club Nantwich in 1920 from where he joined First Division Bolton Wanderers in April 1921, making his Football League debut against Manchester United in April 1922. Very much a fringe player during his three seasons at Burnden Park, he scored his only goal for Bolton on his last appearance (of 9) for them in a 2-1 away win at Middlesbrough in March 1924.
In June 1924 he joined Wigan Borough and enjoyed two seasons at Springfield Park, scoring 7 times in 70 appearances before he returned to non league football with Nantwich in 1926. He subsequently joined Congleton Town in 1928 and Stalybridge Celtic in 1931, before joining Winsford United in 1932 where he finished his playing career.
