Nunhead, London born centre half Norman Sidey began his football career with local Isthmian League club Nunhead in 1928, joining First Division Arsenal as an amateur in March 1929, turning professional in February 1931 and making his Football League debut at Leeds United in December 1932. He won a League Championship medal as Arsenal won the title in 1933-34, Sidey making 12 League appearances. However he was mainly a fringe player for the first eleven, making 45 appearances through to March 1938, featuring mainly as cover for Herbie Roberts.

Sidey was part of the side that won the Charity Shield in both the 1933-34 and 1934-35 campaigns as Arsenal beat Everton and Manchester City respectively. He helped Arsenal to Football Combination honours for four consecutive seasons between 1933 and 1936, making 228 appearances for the Arsenal reserves before leaving the club in 1939. He subsequently served as a pilot in the RAF during the Second World War.

NB in a match against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on 30th January 1935, Les Compton clears his lines watched by Arsenal team mate Norman Sidey and West Brom forward WG “Ginger” Richardson. The match finished a 3-0 win to Arsenal.
