Smethwick born winger Alf Sheldon started his football career playing for junior clubs Good Shepherd in 1909 and Portway Villa in 1910, Rowley United in 1911 and Coombs Wood in 1912, before joining Worcester City in 1913, playing for Dudley in 1914. After the First World War he joined Second Division Coventry City in 1919, making his Football League debut at Leeds City in September 1919 and having a single season at Highfield Road scoring once in 14 appearances. He joined non league Wellington Town in 1920 before returning to Football League action with Wrexham in 1922, scoring 5 goals in 39 appearances in 1922-23 before rejoining Wellington Town in the 1923 close season. He later joined Shrewsbury Town  in 1924 and Redditch Town in 1925.
