Description

Shieldmuir, Wishaw, Lanarkshire born left half John, sometimes known as Jack Scott began his football career with local junior club Wishaw Rovers and played for Cambuslang Rangers in 1907 before signing for Scottish League club Hamilton Academical in 1908. He spent two seasons at Douglas Park and such was his form for The Accies that he was signed by Second Division club Bradford Park Avenue in March 1910, making his football League debut towards the end of the same month against Leeds City. He soon established himself in Bradford’s team and was an ever present during each of the last three seasons prior to the suspension of peacetime football in May 1915 due to the onset of the First World War, helping The Avenue to win promotion to the top flight in 1913-14 as they finished runners up in the Second Division.

He was awarded the Military Medal during the First World War while serving in the Armed Forces and he also played Scottish League football on loan with Clydebank in 1918 before returning to Park Avenue at the end of the conflict in 1919, where he missed only one match in Bradford’s 1919-20 campaign as they finished mid table in the First Division, but he lost his place in April 1921 during Avenue’s unsuccessful fight to avoid relegation and left the club in June 1921 after 3 goals in 266 appearances for Bradford Park Avenue, signing for Manchester United.

He made 24 appearances for The Red Devils during their 1921-22 campaign, which again ended in relegation from the First Division. In June 1922 Scott returned north of the border to join Scottish League club St Mirren where he made 25 appearances during their 1922-23 campaign, his only season with The Buddies before following the trail of professional footballers plying their trade in the nascent North American Soccer League in June 1923, where he joined The New York Giants,, where he played two further seasons, scoring twice in 41 matches for The Giants before his eventual retirement.
