Description

Monkwearmouth, Sunderland born centre half George Scott started his football career with Sunderland District Amateur League sides Braeside in 1906 and Sunderland West End in 1907, before joining Second Division Clapton Orient in July 1908, making his Football League debut against Oldham Athletic that December, immediately becoming a regular in The O’s starting line up.

He featured regularly throughout the seven seasons prior to the suspension of peacetime football due to the onset of the First World War in 1915, scoring 34 goals in 234 appearances for Orient, playing in various positions and scoring an average of five goals per season in all competitions, including 9 goals while playing at centre forward in 1910-11 as Orient finished 4th in the Second Division. His most valuable goals included the only goal of the game in Orient’s victory over Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on 9th April 1909. In 1911, Scott was selected for a London XI to face a Paris XI in France. He was a near ever present for Orient in 1912-13 and 1914-15 missing only one match per season.

After the outbreak of First World War professional football was suspended in May 1915, and Scott joined the 17th Middlesex Regiment, The Footballers’ Battalion, along with many other Orient players and staff. During the Battle of the Somme in July 1916, Scott was wounded and taken prisoner, and died at a German military hospital at Saint-Quentin, Aisne on 16th August 1916. Scott was one of three Clapton Orient players killed in the War, along with William Jonas and Richard McFadden. He is buried at St. Souplet British Cemetery, a few miles south of Le Cateau.
