Description

Riddings, Derbyshire born goalkeeper Ernie Scattergood played junior football for Riddings St James in 1904  and Ripley Athletic in 1905 before joining Second Division Derby County for £11 in August 1907, making his Football League debut against Hull City in December 1907, acting as understudy to Harry Maskrey before taking over the gloves in 1909. He was ever present as Derby won the Second Division Championship in 1911-12, and started taking penalties at the end of 1912-13, converting at Manchester City in a 1-1 draw, and adding a further 2 successful spot kicks the following season.

He won a single England cap in a 4-3 win against Wales at Ashton Gate in February 1913. In October 1914 he joined Bradford Park Avenue for a “considerable” transfer fee after 192 appearances for The Rams, playing both sides of the First World War for Avenue and being more or less ever present over several seasons. During the First World War he was a gunner for the Royal Garrison Artillery. He retired from professional football in 1925 joining non league Alfreton Town after 288 appearances for Avenue, scoring 6 penalties for them including a double against Clapton Orient on Boxing Day 1921.

He was the father of Ken Scattergood, the 1930’s Stoke City and Derby County goalkeeper.
