Wales, near Rotherham, Yorkshire born right back George Sayles began his senior football career with Third Division (South) club Reading in 1921, making his Football League debut against Bristol Rovers in April 1922, appearing 8 times during the season run-in. He then played 11 matches during 1922-23 but remained on the fringe at Elm Park and only made 3 further first team appearances during 1923-24 before leaving Reading to join Midland League club York City in 1924. He returned to Elm Park in 1925 but didn’t add to his 22 appearances during their 1925-26 Third Division (South) Chanpionship winning season, before leaving professional football.
His older brother Tommy Sayles was also a professional footballer playing for Barnsley and Southend United in the early/mid 1920’s.
