Walbottle, Northumberland born winger William Sanderson began his football career in north east football with Scotswood in 1904 and joined Lancashire Combination club Barrow in 1905 from where he was signed by First Division Preston North End, making his Football League debut against Stoke in April 1907. Never a regular in 1907-08 he managed 13 appearances but was used far more often in 1908-09, scoring 5 times in 26 appearances as Preston finished 10th in the League. However he lost his regular place and played his last game for The Lilywhites in January 1910, and whether through injury or otherwise finished his career after 6 goals in 48 appearances.
