Description
Craghead, County Durham born inside left Alfie Sams started his football career with Whitby United in 1931 and played for Shildon in 1932 and Trimdon Grange in 1933 before returning to Shildon in 1934. He joined Grantham in 1935 from where he signed for Third Division (North) Mansfield Town in 1937, making his Football League debut against Gillingham in September the same year. In a single season at Field Mill he scored twice in 13 appearances before moving to Reading in the 1938 close season. He didn’t register in 10 appearances for The Royals in 1938-39, and was released, joining Accrington Stanley in the summer of 1939. He had played once for Stanley when the 1939-40 season was abandoned due to the outbreak of the Second World War, effectively ending his career, although he did return to play for Grantham with the conflict over in 1945.
