Hucknall, Nottinghamshire born centre half Sam Robinson began his senior football career on the books of Luton Town in 1928-29, although he failed to make their first eleven. He joined Third Division (South) club Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in 1929 and made his Football League debut at Watford in February 1930, scoring once in 11 appearances for The Cherries before being signed by First Division high flyers Derby County, where he spent the first half of 1931 on their books without making their first eleven.
Released, Robinson joined Third Division (North) club Mansfield Town in October 1931 and spent two seasons as a regular in their first team, scoring once in 64 appearances but lost his place at the start of the 1933-34 season and played only onee more for The Stags before he joined Clapton Orient early in 1934. However he made only two first team appearances for The O’s in April 1934 before joining non league Guildford City in the 1934 close season, his last recorded club.
