Hebburn, County Durham born right half Sam Robertson began his football career with local Northern Alliance club Hebburn Argyle, from whom he joined Second Division Barnsley in the 1904 close season, initially as an inside left, making his Football League debut in a drawn match at Grimsby Town in September 1904. He appeared 6 times for the first team at inside left during his debut season for The Tykes and scored once in a further 17 appearances during 1905-06 when all but one of his appearances were at right half, his goal coming in a 3-0 victory over Burton United at Oakwell in October 1905, but he was released at the end of the season and little is known of his career thereafter.
