Description

Glyn Ceiriog, Denbighshire born inside forward Dick Richards began his football career with Bronygarth in 1910, joining Chirk in 1911 and Oswestry United in 1912. He turned professional with Second Division Wolverhampton Wanderers, making his Football League debut at Clapton Orient in October 1913, scoring in a 2-2 draw. Prior to the suspension of peacetime football due to the First World War he had scored 6 times in 13 appearances for Wolves, but after War he became a regular in the Wolves’ first team, scoring 12 goals in the first peacetime season of 1919-20 and finishing as the club’s leading goalscorer. The following season he played only two FA Cup ties as Wolves went to the 1921 FA Cup Final, in which he didn’t play, but he did score in the FA Cup semi final replay victory over Cardiff City at Old Trafford. He gained five of his nine caps for Wales while with the club, scoring in a 2-1 win against England during the 1920 British Home Championship.

After 26 goals in 94 appearances for The Wolves, he joined West Ham United in the 1922 close season for a fee of £300. His time at West Ham included playing in the 1923 “White Horse” FA Cup Final loss to Bolton Wanderers, scoring 6 goals in 53 appearances in his 2 seasons at Upton Park. Richards left for Fulham in 1924 and made 24 appearances for the west London club, scoring three times, but his time there was hampered by injury. He went on to play for Welsh non league clubs, Mold Town where he gained the last of 9 Wales caps in 1925, and Colwyn Bay United, joining them in 1927, where he finished his career.
