Heaton Park, Manchester born winger Billy Richards played for Middleton in 1897 before joining First Division Bury, making his Football League debut against Bolton Wanderers in April 1899, his only appearance of the season. However from the start of the new season Richards was a regular first team member, and remained so for 7 seasons, during which he was a member of Bury’s 1903 FA Cup winning team which thrashed Derby County 6-0 in the Final at The Crystal Palace.
He lost his place in The Shakers’ first team in September 1906 and joined non league Heywood United in the summer of 1908 after having scored 27 goals in 258 appearances for Bury, all of his League games were played in the First Division.
