Glasgow born winger Arthur Rankin started his football career with Rutherglen Glencairn in 1919 before joining Clyde in 1920, moving to Dykehead in 1922. He joined Bristol City in 1926 making his Football League debut at Gillingham that August, and that season he was a near ever present missing only one match as Bristol City won the 1926-27 Third Division (South) Championship. The following season he played 28 games in the Second Division but lost his place and only played once more in 1928-29, before being transferred to Charlton Athletic in 1929 after 12 goals in 74 appearances. However he never broke into their first team and joined non league Yeovil & Petters in 1930.
