Description

Bonnyrigg, Midlothian born inside left Peter Ramage began his football career with Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic in 1924 and played for Tranent Juniors in 1925 and Newtongrange Star in 1926 before being signed by Third Division (South) club Coventry City in 1927, for whom he made his Football League debut against Swindon Town in September 1927, scoring in a 4-0 victory. He scored 6 times in 28 appearances for Coventry but his performances took the notice of First Division club Derby County who signed him in the 1928 close season. Although used sparingly in his first three seasons at The Baseball Ground, he scored 5 goals in their 1929-20 campaign as Derby finished runners up in the League Championship.

Ramage broke into the Derby first eleven on a regular basis at the start of the 1931-32 season, and scored a career best 14 goals in the campaign, he was part of their 1933 FA Cup semi final team beaten by Manchester City at Leeds Road, Huddersfield, and was an ever present in their 1934-35 season. The next season he again played most of The Rams’ matches as Derby finished runners up in the League Championship for a second time. However he lost his place in the team from the start of the 1936-37 season and played only 16 games in the campaign before transferring to Second Division club Chesterfield in the 1937 close season after 60 goals in 255 appearances over nine seasons at Derby County.

He was a regular in The Spireites’ line up in the final two seasons before the Second World War’s outbreak in September 1939, by when he had briefly joined non league Chelmsford City after 4 goals in 78 appearances for Chesterfield, and during the War Ramage guested for both Notts County and Derby County before returning to the East Midlands to join Heanor Town. He finally played for Atherstone Town in 1946 and Ilkeston Town in 1947, and later for Qualcast Sports and Brush Sports before his eventual retirement.
