Edinburgh born goalkeeper George Philip began his football career with Banefield, from where he joined Scottish First Division club Heart of Midlothian in April 1898, making his Scottish League debut at Morton in September 1900. He had a spell on loan at Cowdenbeath in 1901-02 and made 87 appearances for The Jambos during his eight years at Tynecastle before a move to Southern League club Portsmouth in the 1906 close season, one of several men brought to the South Coast via former Hearts player Albert Buick. He is recorded as playing at least once for Pompey in the Southern League against Swindon Town in November 1906 (Fred Cook played in the return fixture) but almost certainly featured more often, as a squad summary listed him as the club’s only goalkeeper for the start of the 1906-07 season.
In July 1908 he returned to Scotland to sign for Dundee, his last recorded club. At Dens Park he was a reserve behind Bob Crumley, playing in only six Scottish Football League fixtures in three seasons, his first match being a 2-0 defeat to Celtic at Celtic Park in October 1908 and his final match a 2-0 home defeat to Rangers in April 1911.
