Description

Palterton, Derbyshire born half back (who played in all three central positions) Arthur Pembleton played for Woodhouse Exchange and Mansfield Mechanics before the First World War, and after the conflict he joined First Division Notts County in 1919, making his Football League debut against Burnley in August 1919. He played 35 matches as The Magpies were relegated at the end of the season and stayed a further two seasons, making 80 appearances for Notts County, before moving to Millwall in the summer of 1922.

An ever present in his first season at The Den, he had five seasons at Millwall, where they frequently challenged for promotion from Third Division (South) never finishing outside of the top six, but he was a fringe player from September 1925. After 133 appearances for The Lions he joined Norwich City in the 1927 close season. He had a single season in East Anglia making 21 appearances before his retirement from the professional game.

NB This photograph was taken on 7th February 1920 v Bradford Park Avenue at Meadow Lane, Notts lost the match 2-0. Jack Foster joined Luton Town at the end of the 1919-20 season, which confirms that the 1920-21 label at the bottom of the image is incorrect. The three players standing “behind” were not part of the line up and have been “doctored” into the image.
