Leith, Edinburgh born centre forward Daniel “Jock” Paterson began his football career with Loanhead Mayflower and joined Third Division (South) club Newport County in June 1922, making his Football League debut at Bristol Rovers that August, He scored his only goal for The Exiles in his second match as Newport won the return match 4-1 at Somerton Park, and the last of his 12 appearances came in late March 1923. In their reserves he scored more than 30 goals including 5 hat-tricks but didn’t appear for their first team at all in 1923-24. He then returned to Scotland and played for Bo’ness in 1924 but the rest of his football career is uncertain.
