Bristol born left back Bill Panes had been with Bath City prior to the First World War having joined them in 1914, but after the War he joined Southern League Bristol Rovers and when they were elected to the new Third Division (South) he made his Football League debut in their inaugural League fixture at Millwall in August 1920 making 37 appearances in their opening League season. He was a first team regular for their first two League campaigns, making 77 appearances, before joining non league Sneyd Park in 1924.
