Description

Prescot, Lancashire born outside left Ned Neve joined St Helen’s Recreation in 1905 and from there signed for Second Division Hull City in May 1906, making his Football League debut against Clapton Orient in September the same year. He struggled to claim a regular place in The Tigers’ first eleven, making 13 League appearances in each of his first three seasons at Anlaby Road, but he played in more than half the matches as Hull finished 3rd in the Second Division, narrowly missing out on promotion, in 1909-10.

After six seasons at Hull, during which he scored 12 goals in 104 appearances and was mainly used when famed amateur Gordon Wright was unavailable, he was signed by First Division Derby County in the summer of 1912, and scored once in 49 appearances for The Rams over the following two seasons. However, when they were relegated in the summer of 1914, he was released and joined Second Division Nottingham Forest, where he scored 4 goals in 37 appearances in his final season before the advent of the First World War forced the suspension of peacetime football, during which he played for Chesterfield Town as a wartime guest.

Neve fought as a bombardier with the Royal Garrison Artillery during the First World War, having been conscripted in May 1916. Neve died of heart problems in August 1920 aged only 35, as a result of having been gassed during his War service.
