Description

Middlesbrough born inside right Tom Murray began his senior football career with hometown First Division club Middlesbrough, for whom he made his Football League debut at Sheffield Wednesday in September 1905. A fringe player at Ayresome Park, he scored twice in 12 appearances over two seasons before joining Scottish League club Aberdeen in May 1907. He scored 19 goals in 38 appearances for The Dons in 1907-08 and was signed by Glasgow Rangers in May 1908, where soon after signing he scored in Rangers’ Glasgow Merchants Charity Cup Final victory over Third Lanark.

He scored on his League debut for Rangers against Port Glasgow Athletic that August and scored 11 goals in 15 appearances for Rangers during 1908-09 including a hat-trick in a win over Morton in November 1908, and played in their Scottish Cup semi final win over Falkirk in March 1909, which proved to be his final match for The Gers before returning to Aberdeen in June. He had two more seasons with The Dons, scoring 16 goals in 45 appearances, before a transfer to Heart of Midlothian in May 1911. He scored 12 goals in 34 appearances for The Jambos during a single season at Tynecastle during 1911-12.

Murray then returned to Football League action by signing for First Division Bradford City in June 1912, but found it difficult to get into The Bantams’ first eleven and didn’t make his debut for them until September 1913, scoring his only goal in a 3-2 win over Manchester City that October. In December 1913 he was sold to Second Division club Hull City for £500 but played only twice for them the following February before he was released in April 1914 and he retired through injury.
