Dumbarton born left half Stephen Murray played junior football for Kirkintilloch Rob Roy before joining Scottish League First Division Falkirk in 1933. His time at Brockville Park was marred by injury and he moved on to Stenhousemuir in 1935, spending a season at Ochilview Park before returning to his hometown to join Dumbarton in the summer of 1936, and scoring 14 goals in his debut season for The Sons. He played 100 games, scoring 24 goals, during his time at Dumbarton, but the Second World War effectively ended his playing career.
