Description

Southport, Lancashire born outside left Edwin “Eddie” Mosscrop joined Second Division Burnley from Southport Central in 1912, making his Football League debut against Glossop in September 1912. In his first season Burnley were promoted to the First Division finishing as Second Division runners up, and Burnley also reached the FA Cup semi finals, where they lost to Sunderland in a replay, although Mosscrop only made the team that drew the first match at Bramall Lane.

They went one better in April 1914 and Mosscrop was part of the Burnley side which won the FA Cup beating Liverpool 1-0 at Crystal Palace. He won two international caps for England winning his first cap against Wales in Cardiff in March 1914 and being capped again against Scotland at Hampden Park in April 1914. He also made 2 appearances for The Football League.

He served with the British Army in Salonika during the First World War, before returning to Burnley in 1919. He played 16 matches as Burnley won the League Championship in 1920-21 but he was then forced to retire from professional football in November 1922 due to a serious illness and subsequently returned to his hometown of Southport to work as a schoolteacher after 20 goals in 198 appearances for The Clarets.

He was the last surviving pre-First World War England international, passing away in 1980 aged 87, some 65 years after peacetime football was suspended for four seasons in May 1915.
