A goalkeeper, little is known of J Morton beyond his record at Kilmarnock. He made his Scottish League debut for Killie against Falkirk in November 1922, keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory at Rugby Park. He then took over the gloves and played 26 matches before the end of the season, and in 1923-24 he was an ever present for Kilmarnock as they finished 16th in the First Division. However he was supplanted at the start of the next season and only played once more for Kilmarnock, in a home defeat to Hamilton Academical in September 1924, making in total 67 appearances for Killie.
