Description

Handsworth, Birmingham born full back Billy Morris played for Handsworth Old Boys in 1930 and Halesowen Town in 1932 before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers for £100 in May 1933. Originally a centre forward, he made his Football League debut at local rivals West Bromwich Albion in February 1934 and moved back through the half back line between 1934 and 1936 to then become Wolves’ first choice right back, rarely missing a game in the final four seasons of League football before the Second World War.

He played in Wolves’ increasingly successful late 1930’s teams that twice finished runners up in the League Championships of 1938 and 1939, and played for them in their 1939 FA Cup Final defeat to Portsmouth at Wembley. He also won three England caps. His international debut came on 16th November 1938 in a 7-0 victory over Northern Ireland at Old Trafford. He also played in a 2-1 victory against Scotland at Hampden Park in April 1939, and was England’s reserve for the first two games of their summer tour of May 1939, before playing in a 2-0 win over Romania in Bucharest.

But the interruption of the Second World War had a severe effect on his career, and he played for Wolves 67 times in regional league games as well as guesting for Wrexham. Although he returned to Molineux after the War had finished, he played only 14 more times before joining non league Dudley Town in 1947 where he played two further seasons as a centre forward before retiring in May 1949. In total he scored 3 times in 200 appearances for Wolves.
