Birkenhead born winger Jimmy Moreton started in local football before World War One playing for Bebington St Andrew’s but after the War was over joined Cammell Laird in 1919. He then moved to newly elected Third Division (North) club Tranmere Rovers in 1921 playing in their inaugural Football League fixture in August 1921, a 4-1 victory against Crewe Alexandra, and scoring 4 times in 26 appearances during Tranmere’s first Football League campaign. He continued to play regularly for a further 5 seasons, losing his place in October 1926 after 12 goals in 159 appearances.
