Birkenhead, Cheshire born outside right Jimmy Moreton started in local football playing for Bebington St Andrew’s and Cammel Laird before joining Lancashire Combination club Tranmere Rovers in July 1910, helping them to win the Lancashire Combination Championship in 1914. His career was then interrupted by the First World War but after the War was finished he returned to Tranmere, who were elected Third Division (North) club Tranmere Rovers in 1921 playing in their inaugural Football League fixture in August 1921, a 4-1 victory against Crewe Alexandra, scoring 4 times in 26 appearances during Tranmere’s first Football League campaign. He continued to play regularly for a further five seasons, losing his place in October 1926 after 12 goals in 159 appearances during Tranmere’s Football League era, making around 500 appearances for Tranmere in all competitions.

Upon his retirement in 1929 aged 37, Moreton became trainer alongside manager Bert Cooke and later managed Tranmere Rovers from 1939 to his death in 1942.
