A real ninety-minute player, Derry born right half Sammy Moore took many a knock without giving-up, or his pace even waning, all the time with a smile upon his face. As an amateur he captained Belfast Celtic, he was a quiet and unassuming man off the pitch, “a genuine amateur… he would not even accept his tram fares” revealed club manager, Austin Donnelly. A product of Derry junior football, where he played for Derry Corinthians, he had joined Belfast Celtic in 1924 and won several trophies with them. He reportedly also declined a number of lucrative offers to leave Celtic Park. Formerly an Irish junior international, in 1925 he won Irish Amateur caps against England and South Africa and he played 6 times for The Irish League between 1924 and 1929.
