Stirling born outside right John McPhee played junior football for Cowie Thistle Juveniles in 1928 before attracting the scouts from First Division Sunderland, whom he joined in 1929. He made his Football League debut at Portsmouth in September that year and played 4 times in the first team through to the beginning of October, but never got another chance in the Wearsiders’ first eleven. He joined Brentford in the summer of 1930 but never made their first eleven, returning to Scotland to join Albion Rovers in 1931. Described at the time as “a useful winger… for he can fill either the outside-right or outside left position. He is better on the right however, and from this position has scored many fine goals. Fine and dainty of movement…. Albion Rovers snapped him up four seasons ago and have not regretted their deal”. He played for Albion Rovers for much of the 1930’s before finishing with professional football.
