Bonhill, Dunbartonshire born outside right James McKechnie started playing football for junior clubs Duntocher Hibs and Helensburgh after the end of the First World War, before joining Luton Town in 1920, making his Football League debut at Exeter City in April 1921 in a 1-0 defeat that would prove his only appearance for The Hatters. He joined Southern League Mid-Rhondda United later in the year before returning to Scotland to join Partick Thistle, with whom he spent a season before a transfer to Raith Rovers in 1922.

McKechnie returned to Helensburgh before joining Reading in 1923, making a single appearance that September at Swansea Town in a 5-1 defeat. Once again he returned to Helensburgh before joining Falkirk towards the end of 1923, however the following year he left Brockville Park for East Stirlingshire, before once again re-joining Helensburgh in 1925.
