Wallsend, Northumberland born wing half James McGuire started his football career with North Shields Athletic in 1902 before joining Second Division Barnsley, for whom he made his Football League debut at Woolwich Arsenal in February 1904. He made 33 appearances for Barnsley over 2 seasons before returning to North Shields Athletic in 1905. A year later he was signed by First Division Sheffield United and made his debut for them at Sunderland in October 1906. A regular during his first season, he increasingly became a fringe player during his seven seasons at Bramall Lane, scoring once in 63 appearances, his goal coming on the last day of 1906 in a 1-1 home draw with Bristol City, before once again re-joining North Shields Athletic in 1913 where he finished his career.
