Newmilns, Ayrshire born inside forward Bill McCartney played for Rutherglen Glencairn in 1897 before joining Ayr in 1898, moving to Hibernian in 1899. He didn’t play in Hibs’ 1902 Scottish Cup Final triumph against Celtic and joined Second Division Manchester United in the summer of 1903, making his Football League debut against Bristol City that September, scoring once in 13 appearances for United before joining Southern League West Ham United in the 1904 close season. He had a single season at Upton Park scoring 3 times in 29 appearances for The Hammers, before returning to Scotland to join Broxburn in 1905. After a brief spell he moved to Lochgelly United later the same year, joining Clyde in 1906, where he had a lengthy spell, re-joining Broxburn in 1912. A year later he returned to Clyde where he finished his career.
