Maxwelltown, Dumfrieshire born outside left Willie McCall was the captain of the Scottish Schoolboys’ team while a pupil in Dumfries. He served with the 5th Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers in the First World War, and after the War he signed for Queen of the South in 1919, the year of their formation, he played for Queen’s as a forward during his stay at Palmerston Park.
McCall made 24 appearances in season 1919-20 scoring 11 goals and ten appearances in season 1920-21 scoring three goals. McCall was a goalscorer along with left winger, Dave Halliday, for the then non-league Doonhamers as they won the Dumfries Charity Cup Final in 1920 defeating Dalbeattie Star. This was the first ever trophy win for the fledgling Queens.
McCall moved south to join First Division club Blackburn Rovers in December 1920, for whom he made his Football League debut against Middlesbrough the same month. He found opportunities limited at Ewood Park and made only 11 appearances over the course of his two seasons there, and after six months at Molineux, McCall moved to the south coast to join Southampton in January 1923 in an exchange deal with George Getgood joining Wolves after a single goal in 16 appearances.
McCall scored on his Saints debut against Coventry City at The Dell early the next month but soon lost his place to Len Andrews. He scored twice in 8 matches for Southampton but returned to Queen of the South for £250 in September 1925 before joining North Eastern League club Carlisle United the following year, where he finished his professional playing career. He later became trainer for a local team in Dumfries, Troqueer Juniors.
