Description

St Andrew’s, Fife born forward Laurie McBain began his senior football career with amateur club Queen’s Park, making his Scottish League debut at Hibernian in September 1924. McBain is best known for scoring six times in one game when he achieved this feat in a 7-1 win over Partick Thistle on 8th February 1927, and in the same season two months earlier he was also selected for the Scotland Amateur team to play England, his only Scottish Amateur cap, scoring twice in a 4-1 victory at Filbert Street.

He finished at Hampden with a record of 21 goals in 44 League and Cup appearances for The Spiders, and following his time at Queen’s, McBain went on to play for St Johnstone in the close season of 1927, scoring 16 goals in 105 matches during his stay at McDermaid Park.

He also had a spell on loan at Raith Rovers in 1929, scoring once in 7 appearances, later joining Dundee United, signing for them in September 1933. His career came to a sudden end when he suffered a broken leg playing for United against Arbroath in December 1933 after 3 goals in 15 appearances. Sadly McBain died in Dundee in September 1937 aged just 29.
