Goalkeeper John Martin “came down from Sheffield” to join Southern League New Brompton (now Gillingham) originally as a centre half. However it appears that such was his prowess in practice that he switched to the goalkeeper’s gloves prior to 1905. He was New Brompton’s goalkeeper as they performed a true FA Cup giant killing, dumping out First Division Sunderland by 3 goals to 1 in front of 10,620 at Priestfield in a First Round tie in January 1908.
