Description

Baillieston, Lanarkshire born right back Jack Marshall began his playing career with Saltcoats Victoria in 1911 and first joined Scottish League club St Mirren from Shettleston in July 1914. While with them he had loan spells with Stevenston United in 1917 and Third Lanark in 1919. During his time with The Buddies he won The Victory Cup in 1919 and scored 28 goals in 152 appearances. He also played for Scotland in a Victory international in 1919, although this is unofficial in terms of Scotland appearances.

He joined First Division Middlesbrough for £2,000 in November 1919 and made his Football League debut against Chelsea the same month, soon establishing himself as a regular in both the Middlesbrough team and the Scotland team. He won his first cap for Scotland against Wales at Pittodrie in February 1921 and played all six of the British Home Championship matches in 1921 and 1922. His final cap came in February 1924 against Wales at Ninian Park, when already a Llanelli player, having joined them in August 1923 after 121 appearances for ‘Boro.

Later that year Marshall took the boat to play in the nascent American Soccer Leagues, where he turned out for the likes of Belmont and Brooklyn Wanderers in 1924, Newark Skeeters in 1925, Brooklyn Wanderers in 1927, and later Bethlehem Steel and Philadelphia Centennials (on loan) in 1928. He also gained a further distinction when he was capped by the United States in a 6-1 victory over Canada on 6th November 1926, a game in which Marshall also scored. He returned to Scotland in 1930 but didn’t resume his playing career.
