Balby, Doncaster, Yorkshire born right half Reuben Marr played for local club Mexborough Town before being signed by Harry Thickett for newly promoted First Division club Bristol City  in July 1906, making his Football League debut at Birmingham that September. Marr played 30 League games in his debut season as Bristol City finished runners up in the League Championship, the club’s highest ever finish.

In the following four seasons in the First Division Marr briefly shared the right half position with Arthur Spear and Pat Hanlin making 24 appearances in 1907-08 and 18 appearances in 1908-09. The same season he played in all 9 FA Cup ties preceding but missed the 1909 FA Cup Final when Pat Hanlin was selected as City lost 1-0 to Manchester United at The Crystal Palace, the only FA Cup Final appearance to date by Bristol City. He made 25 appearances in 1909-10, scoring three goals, and played regularly with 30 appearances and two goals in 1910-11, the season when Bristol City were relegated back to the Second Division.

Many of the First Division side retired or left the club in 1911 but Marr and Billy Wedlock remained in the half back line playing in the Second Division. Marr made 33 appearances scoring three goals in 1911-12 but only 9 appearances with one goal in 1912-13 before Bob Young took over as the regular right half. The League match on 8th February 1913, a 3-3 draw against Burnley, was awarded as a benefit for Marr although he did not play in the game. Indeed from October 1912 Marr made no more first team appearances before peacetime football was suspended in the summer of 1915 following the outbreak of the First World War.

After the War Marr returned to the first team made a final 10 first team appearances between November 1919 and February 1920 deputising for Billy Wedlock and “Jock” Nicholson before retiring in May 1920 having scored 11 goals in 194 appearances for The Robins.
