Chesterfield, Derbyshire born right back Arthur Marples began his football career with Dronfield Town from where he joined hometown Second Division club Chesterfield Town in 1901, making his Football League debut against Glossop in January 1902, his only appearance of his debut season. He made only one further appearance in 1902-03 before breaking into the first eleven on a regular basis in December 1903, missing very few matches over the next four years before he was signed by First Division club Sunderland in February 1908 after 13 goals, 10 of which were penalties, in 157 appearances for The Spireites.
Marples played 10 matches for Sunderland before the season end but lost his place in April 1908 and spent 1908-09 in the reserves at Roker Park without making any further first team appearances. He left Wearside in the 1909 close season jto return to Chesterfield Town, who having just lost their League status were now playing in the Midland League, and later played for Eckington Works in 1910 before his eventual retirement.
