Glasgow born left half Gavin Malloch started his football career with Scottish junior club Glasgow Benburb from where he was signed by First Division Derby County in January 1927. He made his Football League debut at Manchester United in October 1927 and was initially a fringe player at Derby, before breaking into the first eleven on a more regular basis from August 1929. He played 33 times in the League that season as Derby finished runners up in the League Championship, but he lost his place at the beginning of the 1931-32 season and was transferred to Sheffield Wednesday in December 1931 after 97 appearances for The Rams.
Initially a first team regular for Wednesday as they finished third in the League Championship in successive seasons in 1931-32 and 1932-33, he lost favour from 1933 and spent three more seasons on the fringes of the first team at Hillsborough, and was not selected for their 1935 FA Cup Final win. After 89 appearances for The Owls he joined Millwall in August 1936, making 17 appearances during a single season stay at The Den before a move to Barrow in August 1937. He made a further 43 appearances for The Bluebirds, before joining Scottish League club Greenock Morton in 1938, whereafter the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 effectively finished his senior career.
