Thornaby-on-Tees, Yorkshire born left half George Malcolm played local football for Thornaby St Mark’s in 1905, Thornaby St Patrick’s in 1906 and Darlington St Augustine’s in 1907. In September 1909 he had a trial with Woolwich Arsenal before signing for Second Division Fulham in February 1910, making his Football League debut at Bradford Park Avenue the same month, where he played just four times in little over a year, scoring once, before moving to Southern League Plymouth Argyle in December 1910. A versatile performer who could perform equally well at half-back or centre-forward, he made a promising start with Argyle but suffered an injury which kept him out for the second half of the 1910-11 campaign.
He returned to the first team at the start of the following season and his form over the next fourteen months led to a transfer to Middlesbrough, for a fee of £1,000 in October 1912 after 11 goals in 40 appearances for The Pilgrims. Over the next two years Malcolm made 101 appearances for ‘Boro, and was a key player in their team that finished third in the League Championship in 1913-14, before his career was interrupted by the onset of the First World War which forced the suspension of peacetime football, during which he served in the Armed Forces.
At the end of the conflict he joined North Eastern League club Darlington, for whom he had been playing in wartime football since 1915, and after they joined The Football League in 1921, Malcolm went on to play 181 games over the next five years, scoring 7 goals, and as club captain he led them into the Second Division for the only time in the club’s history when they won the 1924-25 Third Division (North) Championship in a campaign during which Malcolm was an ever present. But he only played 9 matches for Darlington in the Second Division, and he ended his League career in June 1926 with a single season spell at Durham City where he made 33 appearances. He finally joined non league Scarborough Penguins in 1927 before hanging up his boots.
