Description

Rosneath, Argyll & Bute born left back Archie Lindsay played for Rutherglen Glencairn in 1902 and Parkhead Albion in 1903 before joining Renton in 1904, from whom he moved to English football in 1905 when he joined Southern League club Reading. He spent two seasons at Elm Park before joining Second Division club Fulham as they moved from the Southern League into The Football League, playing in their inaugural League fixture against Hull City in September 1907 and making 36 appearances during a campaign that saw them get to the FA Cup semi final, where they lost to Newcastle United at Anfield.

Lindsay spent two seasons at Craven Cottage in the first team on a regular basis and two further seasons as a fringe player before returning to Scotland to join Dundee in 1910. Moves followed to St Johnstone in 1912 and Third Lanark in 1913, then to Lochgelly United in 1914. He returned to St Johnstone in 1915 before finishing his career with St Johnstone YMCA in 1919.

NB in the photograph taken at the FA Cup semi final at Anfield on 28th March 1908, Fulham goalkeeper Leslie Skene concedes one of two Jimmy Howie (not in photograph) strikes for Newcastle United, who won the match 6-0. The other players in shot are (l-r) Fulham full backs Harry Ross and Archie Lindsay, and Newcastle United outside left George Wilson.
